The Door Creek Watershed is a 29.5-square-mile watershed located at the eastern part of Dane County in southern Wisconsin. At the northeastern edge of the city of Madison, Door Creek begins as a small stream. The main stream continues to grow as additional tributary streams located within the Door Creek Watershed boundary combine. Door Creek flows south 12.7 miles downstream until it reaches Lake Kegonsa, the last lake located within the Yahara River Watershed. Additionally, there is a large area of county-owned wetlands just north of Lake Kegonsa within the Door Creek Watershed.
Door Creek has experienced a long history of extensive man-made ditching to straighten the channel. These efforts aimed to reduce the flooding risk of the adjacent land, which has predominately been used for agricultural practices. However, as the surrounding cities of McFarland and Cottage Grove continue to grow, further development may expand into the Door Creek Watershed. The website will provide information of the steps used to perform our research. An analysis of our findings is found within the results tab. |
